GUEST CURATED STOCKROOM EDIT

We've opened up our stockroom and invited friends of the gallery — and creatives in their own right — to go through and choose their favourite artworks. Here, they share their picks and give us insight into why these works resonated with them.

"You know those moments when you see something ordinarily look memorable? This is it, captured; the fairy floss reflection of the sky contrasts with the twigs and dirt of the earth. It's like a map of a greater land, made miniature."

"I love how hypnotised I feel when viewing Matthew Johnson’s work. How the flow of water is forever changing, you can feel a sense of slow motion of the crashing waves. As if I am in a hazy free-fall.”

ELISE PIOCH BALZAC, MAISON BALZAC

Elise Pioch Balzac is the founder of Maison Balzac, one of Sydney's most beloved purveyors of candles and homewares that has garnered a loyal global following. Drawing on her provincial upbringing in the south of France, Elise creates timeless objects that honour contemporary scent and design.

"I can feel Jedda's free spirit in this painting and it makes me feel very happy! The explosion of colour is extremely refreshing and like a Rorschach test I can see a ginger cat on the lap of a woman leaning on her black jumper with a glass of vermouth in the other hand. An overall incredibly mundane moment treated with playfulness and humour. It is an invitation for the viewer to create a personal narrative since it could be anything... and this is pretty magical."

Artwork: Jedda-Daisy Culley 'Noodle boobs, but maybe their boobs have nothing to do with how they feel', 2020 AUD $4,800 | ENQUIRE

ASHLEY CORBETT-SMITH, AC-S STUDIO & CORBET

Ashley Corbett-Smith is a Sydney-based designer working in product, furniture and lighting design. Not limited to a single material, style, theme or process, over the past several years has worked on countless small and large scale projects and installations; most recently his line of homewares and objects, Corbet.

"There is something about this piece, from the aerial nature and distinct lack of scale that drew me in right away. Without context, it creates a portal where you can readily admire what is in view and imagine what isn't. Is this sunset or sunrise, how did DM get that shot, what else is there? Feeling confined, as we are at present, the ability to be transported by an image and a shift in perspective is a wondrous respite."

Artwork: Darren McDonald 'Torres Del Paine, Patagonia', 2018

ILKIN KURT, STYLIST & GLOBAL BRAND CONSULTANT

"I have been watching old interviews of cinematographers and directors like Fellini, Hitchcock, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Sam Peckinpah and some short films from 60’s to 00’s. I’m almost addicted to the past these days. In that perspective, this art work of Anna’s resonates with me outrageously. It could be a 1 second scene from an old Jean Luc Godard film; intriguing, free, a nostalgia with reality, or like in many Hitchcock’s films, a simple object becomes very important for the development of the story. Two unrelated things happening at once, building a suspense, curiosity, momentum..."

TOM HUGGET, ASTRAL PEOPLE

Tom Hugget is a co-operator of Astral People, one of Australia’s leading music management, touring and events companies, known for nurturing the careers of acts including Basenji, Retiree, Wave Racer and Winston Surfshirt.

"I love Jedda's work. Now that I think of it, the last opening night for an exhibition I attended was Jedda's FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELINGS show at Jerico Contemporary which was actually the last weekend before the world went in to lockdown back in March last year. Maybe this is why I associate Jedda's work with a simpler time in life? 'He gave it to her' puts me at ease. Those big eyes, those big lips – makes my heart feel big."

"Coastal walks and swims are my only respite during this current lockdown period. Watching the waves crash out at sea, movements and shapes formed on the sand... Skye Jamieson's piece conjures that same comfort and calm. A focus on breath, knowing everything is as it should be in this moment."

TRENT EVANS, PASS~PORT & THE GRIFTER BREWING CO.

Trent Evans is the owner and director of cult skate brand Pass~Port and one of the co-founders of Sydney's favourite independent brewery, The Grifter Brewing Co. He possesses a contagious enthusiasm for collaboration, creativity and community.

"I have been a fan of Anna’s practice for some time now. There is something that she captures in many of her works and I find it hard to put into few words, but hey I’ll try: classic, uninterrupted, conviction. How she splices between being a photographer, sculptor and mood-maker is very inspiring. All the while having a very calm openness about herself and her work. I love that with this photo I could see it being presented on a contemporary gallery wall, or in the pages of a dusty archivist book about sculpting or antiques."

"I'm constantly in awe of the way Jedda-Daisy Culley pulls apart and examines the female experience. This work possesses a palpable, unbridled energy that I struggle to look away from. It's from a series of paintings that focus on the space where fear and sexuality intersect. Grappling with the societal constructs placed on women, the artist has delved deep into the idea of the self-sacrificing woman here, using feminist literature to investigate the complex — and often at odds — concept of sexuality and motherhood."
